KSI: KILNFORMING SCENE INVESTIGATION • FREE SPECIAL EVENT
Sunday, April 20, 2008 • 1-4pm Do you know devitrification when you see it? When is the firing cycle the culprit? Why does some glass break? When does it break? What are the limits of Tested Compatible glasses? This session expands on the wildly popular session KSI: Kiln-Glass Studio from BECon 2005. In this interactive investigation, we break into teams working with sample pieces and the firing cycles for those samples. Then we come together to discuss our findings and conduct an in-depth review of how they fit the theory of firing, specific glass chemistries, and other kilnforming principles. |

BULLSEYE CLASS AT GLASS FORUM April 28-May 2, 2008 Kilnforming with powders, frits and stringers offers the glass artist a rich medium for self-expression. This course is designed to develop a strong foundation in the use of these materials as a painterly or drawing medium, while teaching practical applications of 2D design theory. Early, guided exercises will build the student's understanding of the materials and the techniques of applying and manipulating them, and additional exercises will demonstrate the use and interaction of color. A multi-layered “thick block” project will enable the student to begin to take two-dimensional compositions into the third dimension, while the final project will allow the student to confidently pursue a subject matter of choice. Kirstie Rea, is Creative Director of the Canberra Glassworks, an Australian facility for the glass arts. She is an award-winning artist who has worked in kilnformed glass for twenty years. At the forefront of the kilnformed and blown glass movement, she studied with Klaus Moje at the Canberra School of Art and coordinated the Bullseye Latitudes Project worldwide. Cobi Cockburn, a graduate of the Sydney College of Art in Australia and an honors graduate of the Glass Workshop at Canberra School of Art, brings hot shop components to the kilnforming studio. She received the Vicki Torr Memorial Prize at the Ausglass International Conference in 2005 and her work is frequently included in group exhibitions and arts publications.

Bullseye Gallery Features April Surgent April Surgent is a graduate of the School of Art, Australian National University, Canberra. Her fused and cameo-engraved glass panels have a story to tell, recalling glimpses of people and places like translucent fragments of memory. In late 2005, she spent four months traveling in Spain and Europe where she cataloged her travels through writing sketches and photography. Later, she translated her documentation into a body of work for this solo debut, A Meandering Tale, at The Bullseye Gallery.
Bullseye Box Casting Demonstration Box casting is a kilncasting technique in which an object is cast inside a box-shaped mold made from high temperature materials. Kilncasting glass is usually a complex technique. It requires strong technical skill and a solid knowledge of sculpting, moldmaking, and firing. For those of you fortunate enough to live in or near Portland we hope you can attend this box casting demonstration. You'll be introduced to a simpler method of creating a reverse relief cast glass object with the optical clarity of a furnace casting. Using plaster silica design elements in a specially formulated open-faced mold, the process removes many of the variables and much of the mess. This event is free and open to the public but seating is limited. Reservations may be made between July 11-21. The focus of activity is the Houston Center for Contemporary Craft and the exhibition, CONTEMPORARY KILN-GLASS: A Survey of Works from the Bullseye Connection, 1980 to the Present. The exhibition runs from April 8 to July 2, 2006. BECon 2005 will be headquartered in Portland's historic Benson Hotel (http://www.bensonhotel.com) from the evening of Thursday, July 14 until mid-day Sunday, July 17, 2005 with a variety of special events at the Bullseye Factory, Resource Center, and Gallery. ISGB: The Gathering  EVENTS to the Gathering! Bullseye staffers Susan Green, Bonnie Celeste, Kristia Halverson, and Janet Bartholomew are busy making plans for The Gathering, the annual conference of the International Society of Glass Beadmakers. The event this year is in Louisville Kentucky and takes place July 28 - 31, 2005- there is still plenty of time to register! Members of this organizaton have been enthusiastically encouraging Bullseye to develop new styles of rod, which motivated us to introduce 34 new styles in 2004, including new Lustre Rods and Translucent White. ISGB members were among the first to try many of these new colors at last year's event and we plan to have new surprise styles (and deals) in store for this year's Gathering. JUNE 2005
20/20: TWENTY ARTISTS / TWENTY YEARS: Kiln-glass from the New Glass Review of the Corning Museum of Glass, featuring a special exhibit of Jurors' Choice and Rakow Award winners. Each year a jury chosen by the Corning Museum of Glass reviews and selects 100 glassworks created within the prior year for inclusion in its annual survey of the year's aesthetic and technical achievements in the field of contemporary glass. The New Glass Review - or NGR - announced each spring, is always both inspirational and controversial. In conjunction with BECon 2005, The Bullseye Gallery director has selected twenty artists whose works in kilnformed glass have appeared among these top honors from 1985 to 2005, An image of the winning object is paired with current work by the same artist to give visitors both a broader history of the medium and an opportunity to see the career development of the artists represented. The lecture will be held at 10:15 AM in the "POD", a hall shared by both the Glass Centre and the University of Sunderland. WARM GLASS WEEKEND A real-world get-together of internet kilnformers (who gather over on the Warm Glass Bulletin Board for most of the year), Warm Glass Weekend is a conference devoted to fusing, slumping, and related kiln-forming techniques. Demonstrations and presentations and discussions should interest kiln-glassies from beginning to advanced levels. Presentations include The Glass Sketch by Mary Kay Nitchie from Bullseye, and Working with Powder and Frit by artist Catharine Newell.
NORTH LANDS CREATIVE GLASS 
 The theme for North Lands' 2004 International Master Classes and Conference will be "Architecture and Light". Noted Australian architectural glass artist Warren Langley will lead a post-conference Master Class with assistance from Bullseye's Ted Sawyer. THE GATHERING XII - ISGB The summer fun continues in Portland, with a conference of the International Society of Glass Beadmakers. This fun-loving group gets together every year to celebrate all things glass, especially those made with a torch. We love the Bead Bazaar, open to the public on Saturday, the 31st - this is the place to be for hundreds of artists' handmade glass beads. Take home some beautiful pieces for your own collection. Bullseye will be there with a space in the technical vendors area. NORTH LANDS CREATIVE GLASS For the second summer Bullseye is delighted to work with this exceptional glass program in the Scottish Highlands in co-sponsoring Master Classes by Richard Whiteley (Kilncasting, July 2 - 10) and Scott Chaseling (Roll-Ups, July 9 - 14).
