EXHIBITION IN MIAMIContemporary Kiln-Glass: Another Language
When: January 11—February 16, 2007 Sponsored by the Bullseye Glass Co. of Portland, Oregon, this exhibition presents works by over thirty artists working in the varied glass forming methods collectively referred to as kiln-glass. While surveying a broad range of techniques, the exhibition emphasizes, through a thematic survey, the rich potential for visual communication facilitated by this lesser known glass language. The exhibition is anchored historically in Bullseye's development of the world's first line of glasses designed specifically for kilnforming and the current explosion of glass activity ignited by that development. Special emphasis is given to the work done by Klaus Moje, founder of the glass workshop at the renowned Canberra School of Art and considered by many to be the father of contemporary kiln-glass. |

RECEPTION & LECTURE IN MIAMI
Reception: Friday evening, February 9, 5:00pm—9:00pm This reception features a lecture on the Bullseye Glass Artist Exchange Program by Bullseye's Director of Research and Education, Ted Sawyer. He will present an overview of the relationship between artist and manufacturer and how it benefits both parties as well as the entire glass movement. See the work of emerging and master-level artists and find out how their projects at Bullseye have affected the direction of both artist and manufacturer. |

DEMONSTRATIONS IN MIAMIWe are pleased to offer three demonstrations by Ted Sawyer and Bullseye staff instructor Tom Jacobs. Demonstrations are held at the Lowe Art Museum lecture hall and classroom, 1301 Stanford Drive:
Painting With Light (CL0826) This session is filled. Working with glass powders, frits, stringers, and assorted unconventional tools to create shading, texture, and other design elements, you will see techniques that allow an unlimited range of painterly effects. This is a great demonstration for kilnworkers or artists from other media who want to learn how to translate their work into glass. "Painting With Light" is the term that artist Narcissus Quagliata coined to describe the techniques that he and other artists developed in the research and education studios of the Bullseye Glass Co. Working with a palette of sheet glass, frits, powders, and threads, the artists, many of whom normally worked in other media, began to translate their visual vocabulary into glass. Lines, dots, shading—the classic elements of the fine artist and designer—come to new life in glass. Sawyer and Jacobs will demonstrate some of the painting with light techniques, answer questions about materials and processes and show images that provide a glimpse of the exciting new works that are coming out of kilns around the world. Participants will see pre-firing lay-up procedures for working with the materials. More than 75 fired examples of the demonstrated techniques will be displayed. Due to time limitations, no actual firings will take place during the session.
Box Casting (CL0827) Sawyer will demonstrate Bullseye box casting, a kilncasting technique in which an object is cast inside of a box-shaped mold made from high temperature materials. Kilncasting glass is usually a complex technique, requiring strong technical skill and a solid knowledge of sculpting, moldmaking and firing. This box casting demonstration will introduce you to much simpler methods of creating a reverse relief cast glass object with the optical clarity of a furnace casting, using plaster silica design elements in an open-faced mold assembled from vermiculite and other refractory materials.
KSI: Kilnforming Scene Investigation (CL0828) Do you know devitrification when you see it? When is the firing cycle the culprit? Why did that glass break? When did that glass break? What are the limits of Tested Compatible glasses? This session expands on the wildly popular session, CSI: Kiln-glass Studio, debuted at the 2005 edition of Bullseye's biennial conference, BECon (BECon 2007 is on the way). Get acquainted with fellow kiln-glass artists and devitrification simultaneously. In this interactive session, we will break into teams working with a series of sample pieces and the firing cycles for those samples. Together we'll discuss our findings and do an in-depth review of how they fit the theory of firing, specific glass chemistries, and other kilnforming principles. In order to keep our costs down, we ask that there be no exceptions. Registration You must be at least 18 years old to participate in demonstrations. Spaces will only be held with payment. You will be asked to sign a liability waiver in order to participate in demonstrations by Bullseye at University of Miami. Unfortunately, you will not be able to participate (and will forfeit your fee) if you fail to sign the liability waiver. By signing up for demonstrations, you authorize Bullseye Glass to use pictures of you and/or your work for education and publicity. Accepted forms of payment are cash, check, MasterCard, American Express or Visa. A $20.00 fee will be charged for all returned checks. Please do not mail cash. Cancellations Minimum demonstration size is six people. If fewer than six are registered, the demonstration may be canceled and a full refund will be issued. Whenever possible, cancellations will be made at least one week prior to the demonstration date. Full refunds will be made if you cancel your registration fifteen days in advance. For cancellations made with less than fifteen days notice, refunds will only be made if we are able to fill your space. There are no exceptions.
