October 16 - Dec 11, 2004 in Portland, Oregon

Bullseye Glass Co. along with Brad Walker, author of Warm Glass and host of the warmglass.com website, are delighted to announce the third in a series of juried kiln-glass exhibitions directed toward emerging and intermediate-level artists.

Originally inspired by the people who gather around the digital campfire of the Warm Glass Bulletin Board on Brad's web site, the first two WG@BE exhibitions provided dynamic snapshots of the exciting range of talent working just beyond the radar of the major galleries, art fairs, and museums. e-merge: WG@BE3 again aims to spotlight this growing niche within the world of studio glass and to bring it to the attention of enthusiasts, collectors, and dealers around the world.

We stepped up the event this year by doubling the prizes and publishing a full-color catalog that we expect will become a record of 2004's hottest new kiln-glass talent. We also encouraged broader participation and reached out to students in school programs around the world in order to encourage excellence in design, craftsmanship, and creativity in this rapidly developing sector of the glass arts.

Works selected for the exhibition are on display to the public and available for purchase (if the artist so wishes) at the new Bullseye Connection Resource Center from October 16 to December 11, 2004. Awards were presented at the artists' reception on October 16th.

In the spirit of the Warm Glass board, and the international community of artists who share information and advice over the internet, the exhibition and awards ceremonies will be documented with digital images available for online viewing as the activities take place.

e-merge: WG@BE3 continues the tradition begun in 2001 and we hope that it contributes to the growing appreciation of this remarkable glassworking method and the many generous, talented, and sharing artists who work within it.

JUDGING

Work was judged for excellence of craftsmanship, design and creativity, and must have been made with Bullseye glass.

Preliminary judging was done from digital images, slides, or prints by a panel of three jurors between August 23 - 26, 2004. Entrants were encouraged to improve their chances by submitting high quality and/or professional images. Full images with up to 2 details per piece were accepted.

Final jurying was done on site between October 4 - 6, 2004 by a panel of five jurors viewing actual works installed at the Bullseye Connection.

First Round Jurors:

David Cohen, Portland, OR

Executive Director of Portland's Contemporary Crafts Museum & Gallery, Cohen has a long history as an arts administrator. He has worked for a range of institutions including Portland Center for the Visual Arts, the Carnegie Museum of Art in Pittsburgh, the Oregon Arts Commission, the Elizabeth Leach Gallery, the Salem Art Association, and the Portland Children's Museum. He has curated numerous exhibitions and began a series of major glass shows while at the Salem Art Association. His gallery's most recent exhibition, Coefficients: A Selection of Contemporary Kiln-formed Glass, spotlighted four of the Pacific Northwest's best talents in the field.

Steve Klein, Orange, CA

Studio artist, indefatigable teacher, Steve Klein balances a busy exhibition schedule (Bullseye Gallery, Portland, OR: Friesen Gallery, Seattle, WA; Morgan Contemporary Glass, Pittsburgh, PA: Pismo Gallery, Denver, CO) with an equally hectic international teaching program (US, Canada, Spain, Scotland). Over a decade of summers spent at the Pilchuck Glass School have shaped Kleins deep and thoughtful knowledge of both the skills and the ideas that support the best in kiln-glass.

Catharine Newell, Portland, OR

A relative newcomer on the gallery scene, Newell might be considered a WG@BE "graduate". In 2001 the jury awarded her an honorable mention, in 2002 a first place. A 2002 solo exhibition at Seattle's Foster White Gallery, followed by a solo at Portland's Bullseye Gallery in 2003, soon to debut at SOFA/Chicago 2004, with an exhibition scheduled for Hong Kong in 2005 - Newells is a success story that we hope becomes a model for artists rising through the ranks of e-merge: WG@BE3.

Second Round Jurors:

David Cohen, Steve Klein, and Catharine Newell were joined by Lloyd Herman and Martha Pfanschmidt for the final judging of the actual pieces at the Resource Center Gallery.

Lloyd Herman, Seattle, WA

We are honored that Lloyd Herman helped to judge this exhibit. Founding Director of the Renwick Gallery of the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C., Herman is an internationally-respected authority on craft. He has curated many exhibits, and has written and lectured extensively about contemporary American art in clay, wood textile, metal and glass. His books include American Glass: Masters of the Art.

Martha Pfanschmidt, Portland, OR

Martha Pfanschmidt is an artist and art professor at Marylhurst University in Portland, Oregon. During most of her career, her work has been in the fields of drawing, printmaking, painting, and sculpture. Pfanschmidt was one of four artists invited to participate in Bullseye's artist project Found in Translation in which artists who typically work in other media explored their visual language in glass. Pfanschmidt's work in glass was exhibited in a group show at the Bullseye Connection Gallery in March 2004.
